Australia and other stories

Luck by Chance is a decent movie. It stands apart amongst those scores of movies that hit the big screen every friday. Not a new topic but a different one. Somehow the treatment is done at a bit superficial level. Some mediawalas had speculated that Zoya was a dummy director and actual boss was Mr Farhan "DCH" Akhtar. I doubt that, coz the movie is nowhere close to what DCH or Lakshya was. However, the movie does give a feeling that this is made with Farhan in mind. He is all over the place and somehow has got the only character that has been given some importance. Sadly, his character is really single-sided. It might be really ameturish but I guess Bollywood Calling by Nagesh Kukonoor had some better insights to the movie industry (somehow they were painted with think coats of humor though).

Saturday was a hopelessly dull day. Somehow the winds are not favorable and there is a little amount of tenseness all around. Classes are geting a bit monotonous. It's been more than nine continous months of morning full of classes. We hardly got a break in this dull routine. Assignments are no more able to raise interest levels. I am desperately waiting for my summer internship in Marico to bring a welcome change.

Only good thing about yesterday - I watched Australia. Nice movie. I wonder why nobody makes such movies in Bollywood. We have a longer history than any other country in this world, still not many good movies were made telling us stories from our own history. For that matter we don't even have movies dealing with future. Aren't we overly indulgant in present?

To end the post, here is my favorite line from Australia -
"But in the end, the only thing that we really own is a story. Just trying to live a good one."

Pandora's Box

In Greek mythology, Pandora was an extremely beautiful woman created from dirt and water, who was blessed with all kinds of talents given to her by each of the Greek gods. Zeus offered her a box full of disasters that she was supposed to keep closed. Pandora could not resist curiosity, and when she opened the box all kinds of calamities were released. As she quickly closed the box, the only thing that remained trapped in it was HOPE.

ps: Found it as a footnote in the case for next marketing class. :D

Pritesh is thinking... what next?

It's 23:53 hours. Just 6 odd minutes from the famous 23:59:59 deadline time here in WIMWI. My facebook status reads "Pritesh is thinking... what next?"

I guess now I am in right position to pose that question again. :D

A new blog post

Yesterday I updated my facebook profile status requesting my friends to suggest me some topics to write a blog post on. Not many suggestions, I know everyone is as clueless as I am right now. [Click on the picture to expand]

So here I go. With due respect to all the suggestions so far -
1. "Mr. Jain is the shooter of the basketball team ..." (a la Mr. Oburai) :)
Mr. Saafi comes to class after night's hardwork (The fact that his girlfriend is not in town, can be ignored safely). It can not be appropriate on any prof's part to wake him up from the well-deserved deep sleep and ask some silly question about market share of some silly company that does not even exist. So Mr. Jain takes it on himself to protect Mr. Saafi's peace during the class and shields him from all such direct attacks (read coldcalls) from professors. :)

2. How people behave when relationship changes
Ah. This is something even I could never figure out. And I can surely say that if one could answer this question, he/she surely will get oscar in human psychology. (or was it noble price?? Damn slumdog!!!)

3. facebook for beginners.. :)
This one truely deserves a post. Here is one quick suggestion - never fiddle with relationship status field in the facebook. It interprets the changes in its own ways and trust me one wrong move and your facebook profile will be flooded with msgs from everyone who is on your friend list. Take my word on it.

saturday morning musings

I am back to Ahmedabd and am again down with sore throat. I am wondering, why did it happen. I spent the last night at Mumbai Airport. Terminal 1A has hosted me so many times. And every time it has been more or less similar experience. Why cannot we have a better waiting lounge for unfortunate passengers like me at a 'world class' airport like Mumbai's. Just a swanky glass building is no answer to passengers agony.

Nonetheless, one more thing that I did last night was to wait for the flight. As usual, whenever I am coming back from somewhere my flights get delayed by an hour or so. I get to know that only after reaching airport. And I get to spend one extra hour, all alone. I just hate it. Mangalore airport is no more than a makeshift railway station platform. It's located at a very beautiful location though. I heard it has one of the shortest runaway in India. No wonder the landing and take off experience was different this time. The journey of Mumbai to Mangalore is a beautiful one. You travel along the coast line following the sea shore religiously. I tried to identify some beaches, but I guess from 20000+ feet above the ground, everything looks the same.

Yesterday, I landed in Ahmedabad at 8:00 am and attended classes starting at 8:45 am. Interestingly, despite not getting proper sleep the previous night, I did not sleep in class. I felt so refreshed and enthused. I am hoping rest of the slot goes by like this too. It is my last slot in IIMA's faccha year.

Things are changing fast, or at least I believe them to be. Lots of things to write about. But as usual I am short of time. In another 55 minutes, we will be in class trying to understand some of the most tricky issues in Operations Management. So time to go now. See yea soon.

Old man's revenge

And the old man has struck. With all his might, he hit hard right at the weakest spot. I am cursing myself for not preparing enough to face this challenge. One shot and I am busted.

God save me...

Brain Dead continued

Suggestion to BA: If the US travelers are scared of travelling to UK 'coz they perceive a threat due to terrorism, offer them to disembark on safer airports like Zurich instead of London.

brain-dead

Naukri.com should target the users of its sister brand jeevansaathi.com to expand their resume base as they both are targetting the same customer segment - Some student in marketing 2 class in WIMWI

WACing moments

What happens when you spend a sleepless night trying to comprehend a case that has so much sense that you end up getting lost?
Here is one nice writeup by one of the frustrated soul in wimwi.

Credits -Mujran

Executive Summary
The mentelopolos woman is a crazy woman who has a thing for young b-school graduates. This can be inferred from the fact that the woman didnt not marry at the rigth age as she was burdened with her father;s stupid decision of venturing into wine making ..
This move is not in line with strategic thinking as the greeks were running a grocery/ retail shop .. So the core competentcy was missing.. Anyways .. The plan was to get this BRAd guy drunk and then do him.. but since brad is just a juinor consultant - the other seniors decided to
gate-crash as well... since all consultants are always hungry (IIM A Placement Reports, 2002, page 2) Thus the issue is how does an american 24 yr old (speculative on the age ) seduce a greek woman running a french wine business ?
